Abstract

The goal of this bachelor’s thesis is to test semiconductor optical amplifier within EPON network and show the advantages of his use. The theoretical part consists of individual chapters where are gradually defined optical access networks, their properties, primary parts and their division to groups by method of communication. Passive optical networks and their division according to used transport technologies are also described in theoretical part. Single chapter describes EPON network, principle of operation and data transmission. Next chapter is focused on optical amplifiers, where amplification process and description of the main types of optical amplifiers used in optical communications are discussed. Greater focus is directed to semiconductor optical amplifier and his properties. The practical part is formed to design EPON network with deployment of semiconductor optical amplifier in OptiSystem software with description of used elements and parametres setup together with reasoning. Simulation is simultaneously evaluated and compared to results of experimental EPON setup with SOA and without SOA. It also describes configuration of OLT iMAP 9102 and description of executed measuerements which were aimed to find out maximum range of network. Comparison of measured and simulated results is content of the last chapter.
