Abstract

Possibilities of removing manganese (Mn) from watery solution by using low cost sorbents are described in this diploma thesis. Effective sorbents used in this work are orange peel from Citrus sinensis and Fomitopsis pinicola from Fomitopsidaceae family. Theoretical part describes properties and behavior of Mn in watery solution. Furthermore there is mentioned mechanism of biosorption and parameters that have influence on the process. Biosorbent samples were activated with HCl and NaOH concentration of 1,0 mol/l an activating agent in grain size <0,5 mm and 0,5 - 1 mm. Overall, the biosorbents highly effective in removing manganese from an aqueous solution, all samples removal efficiency greater than 80%. The highest sorption occurred already after 20 min and equilibration between liquid and solid phase after 60 min. The optimum conditions: temperature 25 ± 1°C , speed of rotation 150 rot./min, pH 6,0, biomass concentration 20 g/l, concentration of model solution 300mg/l and grain fraction 0,5 - 1 mm. The highest biosorption was at pH = 6,0 and for Fomitopsis pinicola activated by HCl about concentration 1,0 mol/l (activation time 30 min) with the percentage removal effect of manganese 99 % (qmax = 14,92 mg/g). Just a bit lower percentage efficacy (96 %) were detected using the orange peel activated NaOH about concentration 1,0 mol/l (activation time 30 min), (qmax = 14,40 mg/g).
