Abstract
This master’s thesis focuses on designing a user-friendly tool for visualising and verifying the distance-protection settings of an ABB RED670 relay. The tool automatically calculates coordinates from the entered parameters and plots the quadrilateral impedance characteristics of the ZMQPDIS and ZMQAPDIS zones, the directional function ZDRDIR, and the phase-selection function with load-encroachment limitation FDPSPDIS.
The thesis is organised into four parts. The first, theoretical section summarises the principles and fundamentals of distance protection. The second examines in detail the RED670 relay functions and their parameterisation. The third describes the development of the Microsoft Excel-based tool, which renders the characteristics in real time. In the fourth part, the tool is validated using real operating data from a selected transmission line, confirming its practical applicability.
