Abstract

The aim of submited bachelor thesis was verification of the possibility of using glow - discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) for determination of thickness carburized layer. Carburized layer increases the hardness of basic material (low carbon steels with carbon content of 0,2 %), thereby it increasing its resistence against wear and abrasion and also it prevents forming of oxidation layer. The thickness of this layer is usually determined by measuring hardness according to the norm ČSN EN ISO 2639. In the bachelor thesis the results of this standardized method are compared with results obtained by two methods of GDOES and also with pictures of optical microscopy. It has been found, that the method of BULK GDOES analysis with gradual sandpapering is suitable for determining the thickness of layer enriched with carbon, the thickness of carburized layer which would correspond to standardized hardness 550 HV 1 may be only guessed from a graph of dependence of carbon content on the depth, in which analysis was performed. Also pictures from the optical microscope in cross section don´t have sufficient predictive value.
