Abstract

This thesis examines the potential of using a hand penetrometer and vane shear test to determine the undrained shear strength of soils. The tests were conducted on a reconstituted sample of fine-grained soil classified as low-plasticity clay (CL). The shear strength of the soil was evaluated at different consistency states based on the Atterberg limits. Finally, the obtained results were compared with the drained shear strength determined using the direct shear box apparatus.
