Abstract
Assessment of functional potential of territory (FUPO) is a multi-criteria analytical tool, which addresses a comprehensive range of potential externalities of industrial activities in the landscape. It involves not only environmental aspects, functions and values but also, to the same extent, the importance of the economic and social functions.
The main objective of this doctoral thesis have included: verification of the method on a set of 5 locations in selected districts affected by opencast brown coal mining in the Ústí Region, which included 3 locations situated directly in the degraded (mining) and artificial landscape of the Most Basin (Vršany and Jan Šverma mines, Slatinice and Hořany mining dump areas), 1 natural landscape location (Bořeň) and 1 location with sub-urban or cultivated landscape (Obrnice - cadastral unit); furthermore, assessment of the possibility to apply this method in various types of landscape affected by different loads as well as assessment of other opportunities for its application (e.g. in spatial planning, SEA, EIA, preparation of policies and development strategies etc.).
The items under tests included not only individual methodologies and the mathematical concepts but also the data sets entering the evaluation. The testing has resulted in several essential as well as less important modifications of the assessment method and recommendations for further development.
