Abstract

This bachelor thesis deals with the history of mining in the Karlovy Vary region, with a focus on coal and kaolin mines and quarries. It maps their origin, development, modernisation, innovation and the process of decline up to the current state. The aim of the work is to capture the main stages of mining in a timeline, to analyse the impact of the Second World War on mining operations, to assess the impact of political and economic changes on the industry and to identify the causes of the closure of individual plants. The thesis also includes an examination of the technological, economic, social and political context that shaped mining and its changes over different historical periods. The analysis is based on historical sources, archival documents, and specialist literature and provides a comprehensive view of the importance of mining activities for the Karlovy Vary region and the wider region.
