Abstract
This diploma thesis focuses on influence of toxic metals on cellular structure of microscopic algae. First chapter describes anthropogenic sources of metals in aquatic ecosystems and summarizes their chemical properties, speciation, mobility and biological availability for aquatic organisms. Second chapter focuses on interactions between microalgae and toxic metals and on mechanisms of their entry into cells themselves. Third chapter includes experimental part of this thesis, which is focused on examination of cellular changes of microscopic algae Scenedesmus quadricauda and Monoraphidium contortum, which were exposed to two toxic metals – copper and lead. Effects of these metals are then evaluated based on a number of viable coenobiums; this chapter also includes a description of changes in microalgae morphology after being exposed to previously mentioned metals over prolonged time.
