Abstract

The master thesis is focused on preparation and characterization of thin ceramic films on the ceramic substrates. The thin film coatings include wide range of utilization from high temperature engineering to biomedical applications. The coatings are used in order to reduce mechanical wear, chemical attack and improve high temperature resistance. The Al2O3 and ZrO2 coatings on the fireclay substrates were prepared using sol-gel method. The alumina sol was prepared using aluminium isopropoxide and aluminium butoxide, and both zirconia sols were purchased. The fireclay substrates were coated by dip coating processes. The X – ray diffraction was used to obtain the phase composition of the coatings. The morphology of the surfaces was studied by using scanning electron microscopy. The coating thickness was determined by confocal microscopy. The pore diameters were obtained by using the porosimetry and absorptivity. The coated materials final properties were investigated by using corrosion tests.
