Abstract

Life span of fossil fuels reserves has been estimated to several tens of years, coal reserves to more than one billion tonnes and their life span, with the annual production of ca five billion tonnes, to over 200 years. Therefore coal will be the most important energy feedstock of 21st and 22nd centuries and it should lead to maximum use of domestic feedstock. In 1990s the Czech government made a decision to turn down brown coal mining in the government order to regulate mining limits. These completely disable opening of new mining sites and are adversely reflected in the life of active opencast mines mainly in the North-Bohemian Brown Coal Basin which is the largest brown coal deposit in the CR and the only basin where brown coal reserves availability may be increased. This paper deals with the current issue of mining limits for brown coal focusing on the selected sites in the North-Bohemian Brown Coal Basin. Compensations possibilities for citizens from the areas affected by the limits in case of their ease are also stated.
