Abstract

This paper deals with the study of mechanical properties of composite materials, which were made by hand lamination from carbon fiber fabric with epoxy resin. Some of the samples were prepared from a composite board made from a base, virgin, carbon fiber fabric. The second part of the plate was thermally recycled at 550 °C under N2 atmosphere and re-laminated. The changes in tensile strength, total elongation at the tensile strength, or modulus of elasticity caused by the thermal recycling process were compared. Samples from the non-recycled composite board showed 2.7 times higher strength than samples from the recycled fabric. A microstructural analysis was carried out which were identified defects caused by imperfect resin saturation. Larger porosity was observed in samples with recycled fabric. This could significantly affect the resulting mechanical properties. Using fractographic analysis, the form of the fiber damage was assessed.
