Abstract

The diploma thesis focuses on the design of a museum of contemporary art in Prague’s Karlín district. The building is located on Rohan island, along the busy Rohanské nábřeží street, in an area situated between newly emerging urban developments, park, and the future island. The aim of the project is to create an open cultural institution for the general public, becoming a part of the everyday life of Karlín and its surrounding neighborhoods. The design focuses not only on the architectural form of the building itself, but also on the creation of a high-quality public space that connects the gallery with the surrounding landscape and urban fabric. The thesis also reflects on the character of the Vltava riverfront area and its role in the transformation of Rohan island. The result is an architectural study seeking a balance between art, landscape, and the city.
