Abstract

The master’s thesis focuses on the modeling of the effects of geomagnetic storms on the power grid. First, it describes the creation of these storms and how they affect the Earth's surface. Then it discusses their impacts on the power grid. Next chapters are focused on the modeling itself. In ANSYS Maxwell is created model of the Earth’s surface, which shows how geoelectric field and voltage between two nodes of the grid can be calculated. Software EMTP-ATP is used for simulations of geomagnetically induced currents impacts on the transformers and then model of the simple power grid is created, which shows network behavior based on the voltage calculations from Maxwell. The last part deals with the existing modeling capabilities of this issue and presents several programs suitable for these calculations.
