Abstract

The thesis deals with laboratory analysis of backfill building materials based on metallurgical by-products. These are various types of blast-furnace and steel slags and mixed materials of the so-called steelworks waste. These materials are often unstable in building structures and react to changes in surrounding conditions by changing their volume. Volume changes of materials often lead to serious damage of the building structure. The thesis presents basic information about the nature of these materials, about the causes of their volume instability and methods of testing. The complex of laboratory analytical methods used for the analysis of the composition of backfill materials is described and the methodology for assessing their tendency towards volume changes is proposed in the thesis. The methodology is completed with a concrete example of the material analysis.
