Abstract
The aims of this thesis are to analyze and critically evaluate the current position and future perspective of the Slovak Republic and Slovenia in the euro area. The first chapter is theoretically based and consequently devoted to the development of economic and monetary union. It brings a summary of the monetary union, focusing on major milestones in its formation. At the end of the first chapter, there has been paid attention on the costs and benefits of the single currency. The second chapter underlines critical issues of admittance of Slovakia and Slovenia into the Eurozone. The largest part of this chapter is concerned with organizational preparations for the adoption of a common currency and the fulfillment of convergence criteria in these economies. The third chapter mainly presents current situation in the euro area and the position of Slovakia and Slovenia there. Significant attention is paid on the development of basic macroeconomic indicators and the current aspect of the nominal and real convergence in the economies. Also, there have been mentioned and described the measures taken in order to resolve unpleasant debt crisis in the Eurozone. At the end of this thesis there have subsequently been evaluated positive and adverse impacts of Slovakia and Slovenia's membership in a monetary union.
