Abstract
Commuting to work is dealt with by researchers across many disciplines. Usually, economically oriented commuting studies are aimed at quantifying its profitability. They find out whether there is a relationship between commuting to work and wages. It is a prerequisite that commuters should receive some form of compensation for the loss of their free time or due to the cost of commuting, or they can choose from more jobs due to their increased willingness to move. Both of these options should result in commuters receiving higher wages. The aim of this work is to find out whether there is a positive effect of commuting on wages at the municipal level. Attention is focused on employees with permanent residence in Ostrava. For these people, it will be found out whether there is a relationship between their gross monthly income and commuting, which will be approximated in several ways. Data from the on-line questionnaire survey carried out for the purpose of creating the Strategic Plan for the Development of the City of Ostrava for the years 2017-2023 were used. Respondents in the questionnaire stated their place of residence, their place of work and the category of income. Five ordinal logit models were created to fulfill the aim of the thesis, whose dependent variable was a variable containing the gross monthly income categories. The independent variables were the personal characteristics of the respondents, their employment information, and the variable about commuting to work. The results show that the wage profitability of commuting to work in Ostrava exists. People commuting to work from Ostrava (people who live in Ostrava, but work in the neighborhood) are more likely to receive a higher income than people who do not commute from Ostrava (people who both live and work in Ostrava). On the issue of commuting to work within the city of Ostrava (people who both live and work in Ostrava), the distance plays an important role. The likelihood of a person's belonging to a higher income category increasing with the growth of commuting distance both by a kilometer or a minute.
