Abstract
The dissertation describes the creation of a software application called a virtual foundry. Virtual foundry applies the principles of digital twins to the foundry industry. The digital twin is an interactive virtual representation of a real company covering all its activities from the receipt of material to the delivery of products to end customers. The term digital twin originated in connection with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and integrates other modern approaches such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, and virtual reality.
More and more companies, including Siemens, ABB, and Škoda auto, are dealing with digital twins. The advantages of digital twins are indisputable, whether it is the visualization of a real company, the simulation of individual processes, or the training of new employees. All these benefits lead to an overall reduction in costs and increase the competitiveness of companies.
Part of this work is a methodological apparatus that can serve students and companies as a guide to the process of creating digital twins in the foundry industry. This methodological apparatus has a great scientific benefit not only for students but also for scientists who decide to continue in the topic, as a similar basic information pillar in this field does not yet exist. The methodological apparatus also describes and evaluates specific tools that will make it possible to create a virtual foundry.
The virtual foundry application was created using a combination of the Blender modeling program, Unity software for creating 3D virtual environments, and the C# programming language. The entire virtual foundry is controllable thanks to keyboard and mouse inputs and its display will take place on a computer monitor. The virtual foundry is based on a real, functioning foundry company and its objects are interactive, which means that they respond to user input from the mouse and keyboard.
