Abstract
The aim of the diploma thesis is to determine the result of financial benefits of smart cards in banking area and to determine the implementation of such cards.
In second part of the diploma thesis is written the history of bank credit cards and their primary trends, international systems and bank credit cards in the Czech Republic. Furthermore the characteristics of bank credit cards as a payment instrument, usage possibilities and advantages and disadvantages of their usage.
In the third part are introduced smart cards and their primary types, mainly focused on smart cards in banking area.
The fourth part is focused on the analysis of changeover to chip technology, mainly to expenses and pay-offs which the bank experiences with issuing of bank credit cards.
The fifth part is made up of comparison and evaluation of achieved results. It is surprising that changeover to chip technology is not efficient. But the fact that cards with a magnetic strip are not safe it is recommended to change over to chip cards as soon as possible.
