Abstract

Th e aim of this research is to reduce the quantities of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the samples of non-hygienised sewage sludge via laboratory biodegradation. A bacterial mixture of Pseudomonas putida and Rhodococcus sp. has been used. Prior to own biodegradation, a proportion of the samples underwent physical pre-treatment in an ultrasonic bath and microwave oven. Th e laboratory experiment lasted for 28 days and the acquired values were compared with limits stipulated in Decree 294/2005 Coll. Th e obtained results imply that biodegradation of such contaminated samples is practicable. Th e most prominent percentage reduction in PAHs occurred in the sludge sample without the physical pre-treatment.
