Abstract
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to quantify the importance of natural resources to the Russian economy and to evaluate trade relations between EU and Russia in this area. The importance of natural resources to the Russian economy is measured by the Russian foreign trade indicators and also by the Dutch disease model. In the Dutch disease model, the influence of natural resources exports on real exchange rate appreciation, output and wage growth in particular sectors of the Russian economy are analyzed. Results obtained from the data analysis suggest 70 % of the Russian exports are made of energy resources and their value equals to 19 % of the Russian GDP. Even though the Russian economy is relatively strongly dependent on the natural resources exports, there was not found a decisive evidence of the Dutch disease in Russia. Trade relations between Russia and EU might be seen as a relation of a mutual interdependence, when 34 % of oil and 40 % of natural gas imported to EU comes from Russia. In the context of current geopolitic situation, both Russia and EU are trying to diversify their trade partners in those key areas.
