Abstract
The topic of this diploma thesis is the critical components of vehicles with internal combustion engines in relation to fire incidents and determining their causes. The first part of the thesis provides a general description of the operation of four-stroke internal combustion engines. The next section focuses on describing the fuels used in common internal combustion engines. The largest part of the thesis is dedicated to the description of individual components of the fuel, air, exhaust, and cooling systems. This section explains the principles of operation of these components, their types, technical parameters, and so on. The following section is devoted to describing the failure mechanisms of critical components that can lead to fires, along with their possible manifestations. The final section outlines the characteristic traces on vehicles affected by fire, which can help identify the specific vehicle component that caused the fire.
