Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse the influence of culture and religion on the economic development of Spain during its history and the impact on the present Spanish economy. The second chapter is dedicated to basic characteristics of religions that played important role in the Spanish history. These religions are compared based on relevant economic data from the religion survey in the USA. Futher more there are mentioned the scientific works and opinions of several authors on the correlation of culture, religion and economic development. The third chapter describes the political and economical development of Spain on the backround of cultures and religions beginnig with the Christian calendar until the EU accession. The chapter focuses on how particular cultures contributed to the development of Spain. There is pointed out the development during the presence of Romans, Arabians and Jews without omission of the problematic points resulting in the decline of these cultures. Then there is described the rise of the catholic kingdoms followed by the backwardness of Spain in its political and economic development behind the advanced Europe effected by the ultra conservatism which sorely fought down the liberal trends, power concentration, Church influence, bigotry and imperialism at the expense of national economy. It was not until the 20th century that saw Spain catching up with the rest of developed Europe. The present characteristics of the Spanish economy are analysed in the fourth chapter. The cultural factors are compared with France, United Kingdom and Germany. Then there is also described the current condition of economy and its most problematic points, especially the labour market and the competitiveness. The conclusion points out the most important findings and the author's opinion on the influence of culture and religion on the economic development of Spain.
