Abstract

The European Parliament is one of three key institutions that are involved in running the European Union. During its historical development has seen many changes, especially in the legislative field. Given that this is the only elected body, is regarded an important democratic element in the Union. The aim of this thesis is to characterize the current position of the European Parliament in terms of its historical development, structure and powers and focus on representing our country in this institution. The European Parliament has control, budgetary and legislative powers, which over the years have grown significantly. Since the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty, the co-decision procedure has been described as the ordinary legislative procedure, its role in the legislative process was equated with the EU Council.
