Abstract

The objective of the diploma thesis is to find out whether life insurance is suitable for providing supplementary retirement income and to what extent it is used and perceived by consumers in such a way. Theoretical part of the thesis deals with basic concepts of life insurance, especially legal aspects. The topic of insurance contract is covered in detail. In the next, practical part of the thesis, specifics, advantages and disadvantages of each of the life insurance types are described. The purpose of this is to identify those types of life insurance that are suitable for providing a supplementary retirement income. This part is followed by comparison of life insurance and other most often used ways of saving for retirement. In accordance with the results of the survey conducted as a part of this thesis, these are supplementary pension insurance, building society accounts, saving accounts (or fixed term deposits) and unit trusts. The purpose is to point out the advantages and disadvantages of each of the ways of saving for retirement. The last part summarizes the results of the abovementioned survey. The objective of the survey was to find out to what extent life insurance is used as a way for providing supplementary retirement income and also to discover the perception of consumers in this regard.
