Abstract
This master's thesis is conceived as a literature review and focuses on a comprehensive analysis of the Icelandic model of geothermal energy utilization in the context of its historical development, current state, and future perspectives. The thesis first examines the specific geological conditions of Iceland, which create unique prerequisites for the formation of geothermal systems. The main part of the thesis focuses on the utilization of geothermal energy. It also analyzes economic aspects and environmental impacts, including innovative technologies for carbon capture and storage. The final part outlines current and future deep drilling projects enabling the utilization of supercritical geothermal systems and highlights Iceland’s role as a global exporter of know-how.
