Abstract

The problem of the presence of poverty and social exclusion in our society is still unsurpassed. The European Union, as one of the World’s major players, decided to address this issue through comprehensive strategies – Lisbon Strategy and Europe 2020 Strategy. Active participation of the Member States in these strategies is necessary for their success. The aim of this thesis is to make an evaluation of the effectiveness of the European Union’s strategies fixed to fight poverty and social exclusion in the Member States. The European Union quantitatively defined the target values to be achieved by the implementation of these strategies. The 70 percent employment rate in 2010, defined in the Lisbon strategy was not achieved. With regard to the current development of Europe 2020 indicators cannot be expected to meet union’s targets 75 percent employment rate and 20 million fewer people at risk of poverty and social exclusion in year 2020.
