Abstract

This thesis deals with the preparation of mesophase, called mesocarbon microbeads, from coal tar pitch. In the theoretical section it summarizes the findings from the literature about coal tar, coal tar pitch and mesophases. In the practical part of this thesis methodics of preparation of mesophases by microwave heating and their isolation is examined. The influence of temperature and time needed for mesophases to heat up is studied. Mesophases are then isolated by two procedures. In the first one mesophases are isolated by ultrasound, centrifuge and subsequent filtration and in the second procedure mesophases are isolated using Soxhlet extractor. Thus isolated mesophases were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and the results are discussed in a separate chapter at the end of this thesis.
