Abstract

This thesis was aimed at the role of fiscal policy in influencing the economic growth of the euro area countries. Main goal of the thesis was to find out the effect of fiscal policy variables on the defined economic growth model and based on of these findings to propose possible solutions for dealing with recent ficsal and growth problems of the members of the euro area. Estimation of the growth equation was carries out by a panel regression for cross-section of 17 countries of the euro area in period from 2000 till 2012. All fiscal variables were measured as ratio to GDP. The most important results were that social benefits, or so called social expenditures had the biggest effect on economic growth of these countries. This influence was negative. The only variables with a positive growth effects were general government investments and taxes on income and profit of corporations had positive growth effects.
