Abstract
Production, collection and management of organic waste have become a key issue in both modern and developing countries. Composting is widely used for organic waste treatment and is considered to be an environmentally friendly and efficient treatment method. However, it can also have a negative impact on the environment. During the handling or biodegradation of waste, a number of gaseous compounds are produced or removed from the organic matrix and then released. These emissions often include various groups of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), many of which contribute to unpleasant odours.
The aim of this thesis is to characterize the composting process and the associated VOCs emissions. Additionally, the paper seeks to present methods for the identification and quantification of VOCs in compost, as well as technologies aimed at reducing their release. In the methodology part, this work focuses on analyzing VOCs produced during composting of biodegradable waste and exploring their relationship with compost phytotoxicity.
