Item type: Item , The analysis of supply and demand shocks adjustment dynamics of the EU-15 countries(Vysoká škola báňská - Technická univerzita Ostrava, 2010) Černíková, PetraIn this paper, we use structural vector autoregression model with two variables to decompose economic disturbances to supply and demand shocks. This allows us to compare supply and demand shocks adjustment dynamics of output and price level among the EU-15 countries. The symmetry of output and price responses to these two kinds of shocks is assessed on the basis of correlation analysis. For our purposes we work with data for the EU-15 countries for the period 1995-2009. Our results suggest higher symmetry in the adjustment process to supply shocks and differences regarding price responses to both kinds of shocks.Item type: Item , Comparing the fit of New Keynesian DSGE models(Vysoká škola báňská - Technická univerzita Ostrava, 2010) Čapek, JanThe paper is focused on an analysis of model fit of Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models following New Open Economy Macroeconomics (NOEM). Unlike most of the literature on the topic, this paper does not use Bayesian posterior odds ratio to analyze model fit to data; it uses alternative tools instead. In order to compare the results of the alternative tools to the standard posterior odds ratio, this paper uses the findings of Slanicay and Vašíček (2009), who compared model fit to data of several models with the tool Bayesian posterior odds ratio. The goal of the paper is to verify the results of Slanicay and Vašíček’s (2009) model variants with different criteria than posterior odds and to compare the results with findings of their paper. The tools for the analysis are criteria based on root mean squared error (RMSE) and tools from the Global Sensitivity Analysis toolbox. Conclusions of this paper are the following: Habit persistence in consumption is found to be important and price indexation unimportant as in Slanicay and Vašíček (2009). Furthermore, model variants with foreign economy modeled as AR1 processes always perform better than the ones with structurally modeled foreign economy. This finding is in contradiction to the results of Slanicay and Vašíček (2009).Item type: Item , Age, academic career and scientific performance of Czech economists(Vysoká škola báňská - Technická univerzita Ostrava, 2010) Wroblowský, TomášThere have been many papers (both theoretical and empirical) in last hundred years, which tried to explain the relationship between age and scientific output in the academia. Although most of those papers conclude that the productivity of scientists’ declines after reaching certain age and then continuously declines, there is still no agreement about factors, which stand behind the reverse U-shaped age-productivity curve. The aim of this paper is to summarize the theoretical arguments, which may explain the declining productivity of scientists in later phases of their life cycle. Moreover, it provides preliminary analysis of relationship between age and scientific output of Czech economists. Because the recent studies do not take age as relevant factor influencing the scientific performance, an alternative approach examining productivity dependency upon the phase of academic career is also provided.Item type: Item , Parameter estimation of nonlinear econometric models using particle swarm optimization(Vysoká škola báňská - Technická univerzita Ostrava, 2010) Wachowiak, Mark P.; Smolíková-Wachowiak, Renáta; Smolík, DušanGlobal optimization is an essential component of econometric modeling. Optimization in econometrics is often difficult due to irregular cost functions characterized by multiple local optima. The goal of this paper is to apply a relatively new stochastic global technique, particle swarm optimization, to the well-known but difficult disequilibrium problem. Because of its co-operative nature and balance of local and global search, particle swarm is successful in optimizing the disequilibrium maximum likelihood function, providing better values than those reported in the literature obtained using other stochastic techniques.
