Challenges in sustainability transitions in B2B firms and the role of corporate entrepreneurship in responding to crises created by the pandemic
(Elsevier, 2024) Tandon, Anushree; Chaudhary, Sanjay; Nijjer, Shivinder; Vilamová, Šárka; Tekelas, Fanos; Kaur, Puneet
The global emphasis on promulgating sustainable business operations has made it imperative for B2B firms to transition toward sustainability, but these firms' efforts seem to have been affected unduly by the COVID-19 pandemic. There is little understanding of sustainability transition-related challenges that firms may have, or are continuing to face, in the wake of the "new normal" business environment created by the pandemic-related disruptions and these firms' responses thereof. We address this gap by investigating the role of corporate entrepreneurship (CE) as a panacea for such challenges, driven by past indications on CE's viability as a strategy for promoting transitions toward sustainability. Using a longitudinal qualitative research design, we collected data via Prolific Academic from 53 participants based in multiple countries through open-ended essays over two months. Analyzing the data following the Gioia method, we find three main challenges affecting B2B firms' sustainability transitions: (a) knowledge management, (b) stakeholder support, and (c) resource constraints. Five CE and strategic choice-related factors are found to vitally facilitate sustainability transitions and assist firm employees in overcoming the identified challenges. The findings highlight important implications for B2B organizations, emphasizing the need to integrate entrepreneurial activities with sustainability initiatives and prompting further research on resource optimization, knowledge dissemination, and stakeholder education to enhance sustainability awareness.

Innovation ecosystem for smart product: empirical quantification of its key dimensions in SMEs of 21 European countries
(Springer Nature, 2024) Khatami, Fahimeh; De Bernardi, Paola; Vilamová, Šárka; Cagno, Enrico; Ricciardi, Francesca
This paper aims to quantify the innovation ecosystem model for allowing the development of smart products at the country level. In this regard, the research used an empirical approach to scale and validate the six dimensions of an innovation ecosystem model among the small and medium-sized enterprises of 21 European countries. The quantitative methods of panel data analysis and Pearson correlation tests between variables of the innovation ecosystem and smart products were considered to examine six research hypotheses. Three dimensions of the innovation ecosystem model, i.e., configuration, change, and capability, have enough effects to accelerate high levels of smart products in the small and medium-sized enterprises of European countries, supporting the external and internal economic partnerships of institutions and companies, cultural changes in functional status, and knowledge-based capabilities of technological skills in each ecosystem. In addition, hierarchical clustering analysis for the classification of the countries showed that some countries, e.g., the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, France, and Norway, could support their powerful smart products for small and medium-sized enterprises at the national level due to their high mean innovation ecosystem values. Overall, the research can describe the managerial implications regarding the knowledge-based capabilities of the technological skills in each ecosystem to be utilized by managers and stakeholders in small and medium-sized enterprises.

Radical product sustainability oriented innovation (SOI) and triple-bottom-line (3BL) performance: findings from Malaysian and Singaporean B2B firms
(Elsevier, 2024) Ahmad, Wasim; Saeed, Saadat; Janovská, Kamila; Dat, Le Tien; Rizomyliotis, Ioannis; Ahmed, Sohel
Despite the ongoing debate, there is an absence of research in finding the relationship between radical product sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) and firm's triple-bottom-line (3BL) performance. While radical product SOIs may lead to 3BL performance, they may also be fraught with commercialization risks and uncertainty. This study aims to examine the relationship between radical product SOI and firm's 3BL performance in a business-tobusiness (B2B) context with a mediating variable - radical innovation uncertainty. Using a multi-informant approach, survey data were collected from 187 Malaysian and Singaporean privately-owned B2B firms involved in R&D and NPD activities, provided by 326 R&D and marketing managers. The radical product SOI was found to have a significant positive effect on radical innovation uncertainty, which is negatively related to 3BL performance dimensions i.e., environmental, social, and financial. Moreover, this study examines the moderated-mediation effect by industry type, service vs. manufacturing: it moderates the negative mediation effect of radical innovation uncertainty, and this effect is weaker for service firms compared to manufacturing firms. The findings offer clear guidelines to B2B managers for the marketing and development of radical product SOI and facilitate firms' 3BL performance. The study also acknowledges its limitations and suggests potential avenues for future research.

How commitment and platform adoption drive the e-commerce performance of SMEs: A mixed-method inquiry into e-commerce affordances
(Elsevier, 2023) Ballerini, Jacopo; Herhausen, Dennis; Ferraris, Alberto
To cope with the digital transition exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, managers of manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) need to adopt innovative practices to face uncertain scenarios and create long-term value, identified as transformational entrepreneurship practices. Among emerging digital technologies, digital platforms are shaping and outgrowing the e-commerce channel representing a potential opportunity for manufacturing SMEs to embrace digital transformation. Drawing on affordance theory, this research uses a mixed method approach to investigate how manufacturing SMEs’ e-commerce commitment and digital platform adoption stimulate the actualization of three e-commerce affordances: consumer knowledge generation, internationalization, and customer diversification. Based on survey responses from 165 manufacturing SME managers, we find that direct selling through owned websites actualizes consumer knowledge generation and internationalization, indirect selling actualizes customer diversification and internationalization, and agency selling through third-party platforms actualizes all three affordances. The relationship between e-commerce commitment and ecommerce performance is mediated by consumer knowledge generation and internationalization but not by customer diversification. A fsQCA analysis outlines seven configurations actualizing these e-commerce affordances by pairing different ecommerce approaches with degrees of e-commerce commitment. Finally, an analysis of open-ended questions from 24 respondents complements the study and deeply interprets the seven unique configurations outlined.

Growth hacking and international dynamic marketing capabilities: a conceptual framework and research propositions
(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2023) Bargoni, Augusto; Jabeen, Fauzia; Santoro, Gabriele; Ferraris, Alberto
Purpose Few studies have conceptualized how companies can build and nurture international dynamic marketing capabilities (IDMCs) by implementing growth hacking strategies. This paper conceptualizes growth hacking, a managerial-born process to embed a data-driven mind-set in marketing decision-making that combines big-data analysis and continuous learning, allowing companies to adapt their dynamic capabilities to the ever-shifting international competitive arenas. Design/methodology/approach Given the scarcity of studies on growth hacking, this paper conceptualizes this managerial-born concept through the double theoretical lenses of IDMCs and information technology (IT) literature. Findings The authors put forward research propositions concerning the four phases of growth hacking and the related capabilities and routines developed by companies to deal with international markets. Additional novel propositions are also developed based on the three critical dimensions of growth hacking: big data analytics, digital marketing and coding and automation. Research limitations/implications Lack of prior conceptualization as well as the scant literature makes this study liable to some limitations. However, the propositions developed should encourage researchers to develop both empirical and theoretical studies on this managerial-born concept. Practical implications This study develops a detailed compendium for managers who want to implement growth hacking within their companies but have failed to identify the necessary capabilities and resources. Originality/value The study presents a theoretical approach and develops a set of propositions on a novel phenomenon, observed mainly in managerial practice. Hence, this study could stimulate researchers to deepen the phenomenon and empirically validate the propositions.

Volatility transmission from critical minerals prices to green investments
(Elsevier, 2023) Sohag, Kazi; Sokolova, Yulia; Vilamová, Šárka; Blueschke, Dmitri
Green investments offer a promising market-based approach to combating global climate change, yet they are susceptible to risk transmission from various assets. While existing literature has primarily focused on the volatility implications among green investments, traditional stock returns, energy, and precious metals markets, it has overlooked the potential for volatility transmission from critical minerals markets to green investments. This is because the clean production process involves both eco-friendly stock and mineral markets, so fluctua tions in mineral prices can result in volatility spillover to green investments. In this study, we examine the volatility transmission from critical mineral prices (such as copper, nickel, and lead) to green bonds and green equities in a global context. Using cross-quantilogram and cross-quantile spectrum analysis, we analyse daily data from October 31, 2014, to October 5, 2022, taking into account short-, medium-, and long-term investment horizons. Our findings indicate strong short- and long-term connections between green financial and mineral markets during market booms and busts. Conversely, under normal market conditions, both markets tend to behave independently. Our results provide valuable insights for green project managers, investors, and policy makers, highlighting the efficiency of green investments in achieving environmental goals.

Equity crowdfunding for university spin-offs: Unveiling the motivations, benefits, and risks related to its adoption
(Taylor & Francis, 2023) Troise, Ciro; Bresciani, Stefano; Ferraris, Alberto; Santoro, Gabriele
Equity crowdfunding (ECF) has spread rapidly worldwide, however its use by university spin-offs (USOs) along with scholarly attention to it, is still extremely limited. In this qualitative study, we examine the views of founders of the few USOs that have used ECF in the Italian market and unveil their motivation for bypassing traditional funding models and the related benefits and risks. USOs have mixed motivations in pursuing ECF (testing the market, involving new people, overcoming limited public/private supports or funds, attractiveness to traditional investors, risky forecasts); at the same time there are significant benefits (crowd participation, strategic resources, legitimacy for the valorization/exploitation of research results and knowledge transfer mechanisms) and underlying risks (management of investors and their lack of scientific culture, data use, bureaucracy, uncertainty related to outputs/technologies). This study contributes to the literature on crowdfunding and USOs and has implications for the strategic decisions of founders, universities, policymakers, governments.

A systematic review of family business and consumer behaviour
(Elsevier, 2023) Bargoni, Augusto; Alon, Ilan; Ferraris, Alberto
The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review on the intertwining of family business and consumer behaviour literature. Leveraging bibliometric software, we systematically reviewed 178 articles from 1991 to 2022. Five research clusters are identified: (1) the familiness of the firm: a social capital perspective, (2) promoting corporate social responsibility, (3) branding the family firm, (4) family firm characteristics and (5) the family firm brand. This study puts forward a novel conceptual framework to analyse the concept of familiness from a dual perspective: the business perspective to investigate how and why family firms communicate their family nature and the consumer perspective to explore how stakeholders perceive family firms' unique characteristics. Moreover, we show a change in research patterns in family business and consumer literature, providing a deeper understanding of the conceptual structure of the field. Finally, we suggest 28 future research questions.

Efficiency of consumer behaviour and digital ecosystem in the generation of the plastic waste toward the circular economy
(Elsevier, 2023) Khatami, Fahimeh; Vilamová, Šárka; Cagno, Enrico; De Bernardi, Paola; Neri, Alessandra; Cantino, Valter
A circular economy can help reduce the impact of plastic waste using reaction, resilient, and digital approaches. In addition, it can facilitate reducing plastic consumption. In this regard, consumer behaviour and digitalization are deemed to be two main factors that play major roles in the implementation of a circular economy of plastic waste. The idea of this paper is to understand the relevance of consumer behaviour and digital ecosystem effi-ciency on plastic waste at the country level. Hence, the efficiency of eight European countries in the generation of plastic waste was analysed using international databases and the statistical method of receiver operation char-acteristic (ROC). For this purpose, the dependent actual state variables were defined as plastic waste generations, and the independent test variables were defined as digital ecosystem and consumer behaviour factors. ROC plots for the determination of the area under the curve (AUC) indices were produced between the mentioned state and test variables. The results revealed that consumer behaviour increases the higher generation of plastic waste (AUC >0.6), indicating that consumer behaviours have high effectiveness on the generation of plastic waste in European countries. Furthermore, the results indicated that the digital ecosystem has a controlling role in the generation of plastic waste in the study area (AUC <0.5), indicating the digital ecosystem factors associated with the low generation of plastic waste. The overall consumer behaviour in the selected European countries showed an unskilled role regarding the higher generation of plastic waste, while the digital ecosystem context showed a mitigating role in decreasing plastic pollution. The confirmation of the research hypotheses leads to some managerial propositions for the circular economy of plastic waste in the area of consumer behaviour and digi-talization. The results propose an elaborated framework, including a reduction in waste generation, recycling in waste circulation, recovery in waste valorization, and efficiency in resource consumption by the digitalization of design technology and education in consumer behaviour for the circular management of plastic waste.

Evaluation of the functionality of bankruptcy models in mining companies
(Technická univerzita Košice, Fakulta baníctva, ekológie, riadenia a geotechnológií, 2022) Kozel, Roman; Vilamová, Šárka; Prachařová, Lenka; Sedláková, Zuzana
Mining companies are an important part of the national industry of the Czech Republic. Since mining companies are important for the industry, it is necessary to predict their economic development. Moreover, forecasting the economic development of an enterprise in terms of the risk of bankruptcy is an important activity for the financial management of any enterprise. One of the ways to predict economic development and assess the risk of possible bankruptcy is to use bankruptcy models. The aim of this paper is to determine the most appropriate model for predicting the bankruptcy risk of a mining company. The subject of the article is to identify the most suitable bankruptcy models applicable for bankruptcy risk prediction in Czech conditions of mining enterprises and to verify their functionality on real data of mining enterprises. On the basis of a search of expert sources and comparative analysis, it was found that the most suitable models for predicting the development of the enterprise in terms of bankruptcy risk are modified versions of traditional bankruptcy models. The analysis showed that the bankruptcy models are the IN05 Index, Altman's analysis for Czech companies and the modified Taffler's index. The authors' team conducted a thorough analysis during which they verified the functionality of the selected bankruptcy models on real data of mining companies. After a thorough analysis to test the functionality of bankruptcy models on real data from mining companies, the most appropriate model for estimating the evolution of bankruptcy probability risk was identified.

Selecting sustainability key performance indicators for smart logistics assessment
(4S go, s.r.o., 2022) Lenort, Radim; Wicher, Pavel; Samolejová, Andrea; Zsifkovits, Helmut; Raith, Chaira; Miklautsch, Philipp; Pelikánová, Jana
The application of smart technologies and applications is becoming increasingly common in the logistics processes of companies and supply chains. However, standard logistics indicators are still used to evaluate their performance, which contradicts the sustainable development strategy of many industrial enterprises and their supply chains. Thus, the article aims to design a methodology for selecting sustainability key performance indicators (SKPIs) suitable for assessing smart logistics and its technologies and applications. The research relies on cluster analysis of the SKPIs recommended in the relevant literature, frequency analysis of indicators used in practice and their comparison. The cluster analysis showed that the primary attention in the references is given to sustainability's economic and environmental dimensions. Most frequently, the authors highlighted the importance of the following indicators: production-related costs and investments, planning performance and quality, customer satisfaction, energy efficiency, waste intensity and treatment, emissions, and resource efficiency. On the contrary, the frequency analysis corroborated that leading industrial enterprises paid more-or-less balanced attention to all areas of sustainability, but at the company level. The article's primary result constitutes a methodology comprising six steps, respecting the results of the analyses carried out: specialIntscript Sustainability objectives definition; specialIntscript Establishing SKPIs cluster pool; specialIntscript Definition of criteria for selecting SKPIs clusters; specialIntscript Selection of SKPIs clusters; specialIntscript Definition of SKPIs and their parameters; and specialIntscript Development of SKPIs hierarchical structure.

Methodology for calculating the cost price of the bending process for the needs of manufacturing logistics
(4S go, s.r.o., 2022) Janovská, Kamila; Vilamová, Šárka; Labounek, Dalibor; Kozel, Roman; Pala, Tomáš
The research of this paper aims to characterize and describe the methodological sequence of operations necessary for the correct calculation of the cost price when performing a bid calculation in the bending process step on a bending machine. The research focuses on determining the methodology and its application exclusively to sheet metal parts in the engineering industry in the processing of steel and stainless-steel sheets. To research this issue, we used empirical and quantitative research in a real work environment. The methodology for calculating the cost price of bending sheet metal parts yields the relationships between component inputs, the result of which is a time parameter that is expressed by the actual production costs. The results can be used in the real working environment of manufacturing companies for comparison with already established practices and a verification of their outputs. At the same time, it is possible to use the determined methodological procedure as a basis for implementation in the Aurendi web application.
