Abstract

Contemporary world is facing an issue of unequal development of regions. It is essential to look for possibilities of supporting regions, improving their competitivness and ensuring good living conditions for the population living there. Theories based on the Institutional Economy, namely the Theory of Learning Regions, suggest a possible way of helping the development of regions. In the Theory of Learning Regions the emphasis is put on innovations, knowledge, skills and basically the whole process of education (learning). Universities play an important role in the development of regions. Nowadays universities have three basic tasks – provide education, research and development activities and cooperation with practice. The aim of the diploma thesis is to evaluate the influence of the Technical University of Ostrava on the development of the region. The three basic tasks mentioned above are the subject of the investigation of the thesis.
