Assessment of Level of Digitalization using BIM Maturity Models

Abstract

This diploma thesis examines how the level of digitalization and BIM implementation in construction can be assessed through selected BIM maturity-related approaches. It reviews and compares the Bew–Richards model, the VDC Scorecard, and the ISO 19650 series, with attention to their structure, evaluation logic, and suitability for project-level application. The selected approaches do not assess the same thing. The Bew–Richards model provides a broad maturity reference, and the VDC Scorecard offers a stronger project assessment perspective, while ISO 19650 was the closest fit because it deals directly with how project information is required, produced, checked, exchanged, and prepared for use. Based on ISO 19650 information-management logic, a thesis-specific framework was organised into seven assessment areas. The framework was applied qualitatively to the CEETe project using criterion-based analysis of project documentation. The results show a well-developed but uneven level of digitalization and BIM implementation. Digital working was clearly established in coordination, shared data handling, checking, exchange, and handover preparation. Less stable areas remained in documentary closure, traceability, validation before transfer, and continuity toward later use. The thesis provides a comparative study of selected approaches, identifies their benefits and limitations for project-level use, and delivers practical recommendations for improving information-management practice.
