Abstract

The doctoral thesis deals with the issue of human capital and its measurement at the macroeconomic level. The goal of the work is to set up a model of human capital based on multicriteria evaluation of alternatives and its use for comparing the level of human capital in selected EU member countries. Calculated indicator also reflects the level of social capital and health of workforce besides educational attainment which is often used for the human capital level approximation. The results showed the highest level of human capital in Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Belgium and United Kingdom. The lowest level of human capital was calculated for Portugal, Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland. The Czech Republic belongs to the countries rather below average, while, in comparison with more successful economies, it especially lags in the area of social capital. Another finding is that multicriteria indicator of human capital is more than 80% positively correlated with labor productivity at 1% significance level. This result indicates that it is a suitable indicator for measuring the level of human capital and can be used in further research, e.g. in long-term economic growth models.
