Abstract
This thesis within the area of fluid mechanics deals with the numerical modelling of the flow on a rotating disk based on the practical problem of materialographic cutting. Abrasive wet cutting is the most appropriate materialographic cutting method in which the cooling liquid flushes the wheel to avoid damaging the sample with frictional heat. The thesis is focused on two main approaches to the modelling. The first part contains the flow within a 3D cylindrical cavity in which the disk rotates. Water enters the cavity between the stationary wall and rotating disk from the side bore and leaves the cavity through the bottom gap. Single rotating reference frame was applied on the solution of the one phase flow. The second part examines the flow of the water as it is ejected from the nozzle onto the rotating disk. ANSYS Fluent’s volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase model was applied to predict the flow and temperature fields and volume fraction of the cooling water in air region.
