Abstract

The proposed dissertation named “Design of model of coordination for traffic lights controlled intersections with a focus to increase traffic flow” is devoted to determination of a suitable cycle length for controlling light controlled intersections even for the cases where both-directional coordination is not possible to implement according to current approaches. In the introduction there are summarized currently most often methods used for intersection coordination proposal and theoretical approaches for traffic flow modelling. The main contribution of the dissertation is shown in Sections 4 and 5. Section 4 is devoted to determination of coordinating speed and suitable cycle length which corresponds to intensity of coordinated entry regarding ratio to overall capacity of the intersection and distance of coordinated intersections. The approach is based on extension of the interval for choosing coordinating speed. Entry intensity is defined using traffic flow parameters for coordinated direction; the parameters are derived from its macroscopic model. Variable traffic signs are applied for controlling speed of coordinated flow in practice. Section 5 deals with simulation of two localities – a model one and a real one – for which control plans were proposed using designed method. Simulation experiments results proved that the new proposed method enables increasing traffic fluency. In final sections there are mentioned conditions for technical equipment of infrastructure and contributions for development of science and practice are summarized.
