Abstract
The subject of my thesis is unemployment in EU countries and EU as a whole. Unemployment is very serious problem, not only for unemployed individuals but also for the society as a whole. It must be admitted, there is no simple solution of unemployment in a market economy, but it can be effectively confronted by better preparedness to constant changes in labour market which generally reflects the economic situation of the country.
My thesis is divided into six chapters. The second chapter deals with the theory of unemployment and employment policy. The third chapter deals with selected indicators of unemployment which are used for member countries of European Union in 2000 – 2010. The attention is paid to the development and differences of indicators in unemployment during the period in EU member countries and the Union as a whole. The fourth chapter describes the principles for the employment policies of the European Union. There are explained the strategies in the employment policy. Attention is also given to approaches of employment policy in the European Union. The fifth chapter presents suggestions and recommendations for the countries of the European Union the area of unemployment.
