Abstract
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to evaluate the efficiency of in-house (internal) and outsourced (external) parcel delivery in a company and to propose measures aimed at optimizing costs. The topic was chosen in view of the growing importance of efficient delivery in modern logistics and the need for companies to respond flexibly to seasonal fluctuations in demand.
The working hypothesis assumed that neither delivery model is universally the most advantageous and that the optimal solution lies in combining both models according to current demand levels. To verify this hypothesis, internal company reports from 2024 were used, anonymised, and adjusted in accordance with internal guidelines. In the practical part, the break-even point method and cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis were applied to compare the two models. The analysis also included an evaluation of seasonal, monthly, and weekly demand trends and their impact on cost efficiency.
The results confirmed that in-house delivery is more cost-effective during periods of high and stable demand, whereas outsourced delivery is more efficient during low demand and sudden fluctuations. Based on these findings, a combined strategy was proposed to leverage the advantages of both models, along with measures for their optimization, such as more efficient route planning, order consolidation, the use of on-call couriers, and more flexible contractual terms with external carriers.
The proposed recommendations can serve as a basis for managerial decision-making and contribute to long-term cost reduction and increased flexibility of the delivery process.
