Abstract

Initial training of new employees is one of the crucial activities in company since it influences workers’ performance, and therefore the profitability of the company. It is quite difficult to have training correctly set. Often certain mistakes occur in some of the phases of training cycle – planning, designing, delivering or evaluating. This problem has its place in every firm. This paper concentrates on newcomer training in a language school that uses the Callan method to teach people English. The Callan method is a specific direct method developed as a language product in 1960s. In order to be able to teach by this method, teacher needs to go through specialized training. What are contents of such training? What should starting teacher know and be able to use? Are there any ‘gaps’ in a training programme used by the language school? And what are those? How can they be removed? The outcome of this paper, therefore, is an analysis of training conditions in the language school and recommendations for possible improvement related to the Callan method.
