Abstract

The thesis examines the issue of security screening in civil aviation and its significance for ensuring the protection of airport operations. The aim of the thesis is to develop an innovative proposal leading to the improvement of security screening processes in civil aviation. The methodological framework includes a quantitative survey focused on passengers’ experiences with the security screening process and a risk assessment related to the potential carriage of prohibited items through screening checkpoints, with the analysis conducted using the FMEA and CARVER methods. The results of the quantitative research confirmed all three main hypotheses and demonstrated statistically significant relationships across all sub-hypotheses, with some showing medium to strong effect sizes. The findings indicate that security screening is perceived by passengers as a complex interaction between the process itself, the environment, and the personnel. The risk analysis identified a set of structural and procedural weaknesses that influence the reliability and efficiency of the current security screening system. Based on these insights, a set of technical, organizational, and procedural measures was proposed. These measures are realistic and practically feasible and have the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency and security of the screening process as well as improve the overall passenger experience.
