Abstract

Radiofrequency catheter ablation is the most widely used, commercially available method of treating heart rhythm arrhythmias. In most electrophysiological laboratories, unipolar ablation is a first-choice method, but it has its limitations (length of ablation time, ablation rate, tissue contact), and in some cases may be insufficient. In this diploma thesis an experiment on an animal heart was performed to assess the effects of bipolar ablation. For this purpose, a linking hardware element was created to allow bipolar connection of ablation system based on conventional commercially available techniques (used for unipolar ablation). The work compares the effects of bipolar and unipolar ablation under the same defined conditions (radiofrequency ablation: ablation power, ablation time, cooling) in order to achieve the transmurality of the lesion and evaluate the results statistically.
